Chapter 6: Set a Good Example
Jasmin was running late. She told Angelina that she would be at her house by 6:00 but Jasmin’s mom had other things in mind. Tonight was Angelina’s 14th birthday party and 3 of her friends were going to spend the night, including Jasmin.
“I hope you didn’t forget that I have an appointment at 9:00 in the morning. You promised me you would babysit Zack.”
“But Mom, it’s a sleepover!”
“I know. You’ll just have to figure out how to have fun and still keep your word with me.”
Jasmin mumbled and grumbled, but she knew deep down that her mother was right. Plus she knew that whenever she spent the night at her friend’s house, they never got any sleep. She wasn’t sure why they even called it a “sleep-over.” No one ever slept! Jasmin wished she didn’t have to think about what the “right” thing to do was. She just wished that knew already.
Angela only lived down the block so she said goodby to her mom and walked to Angelina’s house. The other friends were there already.
“I’m not going to be able to sleep over, but I can stay till midnight. I have to babysit my baby brother.”
The other girls grumbled. They couldn’t believe that Jasmin’s mom wouldn’t let her spend the night. After all, a birthday only happens once a year. Jasmin listened but didn’t say anything. Instead she said, “Come on, let’s have a party!”
The put on music and did some dance routines. They made brownies and popcorn and watched a scary movie.
At one point in time, Kelly went into the kitchen and found Jasmin rinsing the bowl that they made the brownies in.
Jasmin told her, “If you don’t let the bowl soak in water, it’ll be too hard to clean in the morning.”
The girls played one quick game of strip poker and then Jasmin said, “Can you all walk me back home? I don’t think it is a good idea to go by myself. It is probably best that I go home tonight. I can’t stay up till 4:00 in the morning. I’ll never wake up in time to help out my mom.”
The other girls started to giggle, but they walked Jasmin home anyway.
On the way back to Angelina’s house, Kelly told the other girls about the brownie dish and how Jasmin had put it in the sink to soak. Then Angelina told her friends how Jasmin always does the right thing.
“I wish I could be more like Jasmin.”
